Cinematic Sanctuary: Stories of Home

The Polar Express

Dir. Robert Zemeckis | USA  | 100 mins | Cert U  | 2004 | Animation

Followed by a family-friendly seasonal activity.

Late on Christmas Eve, after the town has gone to sleep, a young boy embarks on a magical adventure to the North Pole on the mysterious Polar Express, learning about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas.

When the boy arrives at the North Pole, Santa Claus offers him any gift he desires. The boy asks only for a bell from the harness of Santa’s reindeer. But on the way home, the bell is lost… but not for long.

In this film, director Robert Zemeckis pioneered performance capture, or motion capture, to record actors’ movements and translate them directly into 3D CGI environments. Tom Hanks played six roles using the innovative technology at the time.

The Polar Express is based on the classic children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg, where home is a safe place to return.

Cinematic Sanctuary: Stories of Home is a season of films at The Old Town Hall -from October 2026 to June 2027- as part of a cross-community initiative in Swindon, Wiltshire, and Gloucestershire, supported by BFI awarding National Lottery funds.
The Old Town Hall’s independent film programme has been curated by Lorena Pino Montilla, as part of the wider Stories of Home project.
