Surviving Earth

Dir. Thea Gajic | UK  | 100 mins | Cert 15  | 2025 | Drama

Based on a true story, Surviving Earth follows Vlad, a Yugoslav refugee and talented harmonica player who fled to the UK in the 90s. Now rebuilding his life in Bristol and working as a counsellor, he longs to be the father his daughter Maria deserves, but the shadows of his past refuse to fade.

When he forms a band to reconnect with his roots, music becomes his lifeline – a fragile bridge between who he was and who he wants to be.  But as difficulties arise, old habits begin to resurface, and Vlad risks losing it all.

A powerful debut feature from writer-director Thea Gajic, Surviving Earth announces the arrival of a bold and exciting new voice in contemporary British cinema.

In Surviving Earth, home is a complex concept, split between two cultures, countries, languages and trauma. Is it possible to repair and rebuild a lost sense of self?

Cinematic Sanctuary: Stories of Home is a season of films at The Old Town Hall -from October 2026 to June 2027- as part of a cross-community initiative in Swindon, Wiltshire, and Gloucestershire, supported by BFI awarding National Lottery funds.
The Old Town Hall’s independent film programme has been curated by Lorena Pino Montilla, as part of the wider Stories of Home project.
