Nine artists from Trowbridge Artists’ Café make a variety of responses to the theme of Rooted by exploring wood in its different aspects: not least as a material which is both beautiful and useful, fashioned since time immemorial into artefacts, tools, shelters, sculptures and other structures, including possibly the first wooden bridge over the Biss which gives Trowbridge its name.

Over many generations, the complex ecosystem known as a wood has been an ancient feature of the landscape rich in metaphorical connotations. Artists through the ages have grappled with the aesthetics of the subject. Each wood has its own character and spirit of place, its biodiversity having its own inherent value. Today we are beginning to appreciate the wood as a resource for health and leisure, carbon capture and flood control, as well as a commercial source of timber.
