Cinematic Sanctuary: Stories of Home

Dir. Mark Jenkin | UK | 114 mins | Cert 15 | 2025 | Drama

Followed by in-person Q&A with executive producer Ben Bond.

When a fishing boat, the Rose of Nevada, lost with all hands 30 years ago, mysteriously reappears in the old harbour of a forgotten Cornish village, it’s surely a sign for those who remember. The boat must go out to sea again, and maybe the devastated village’s luck will turn.

Young father Nick (George MacKay) and enigmatic newcomer Liam (Callum Turner) join captain Murgey (Francis Magee), and they head to sea. But when they return, satisfied with their haul, something is amiss — they’ve slipped back in time, and the villagers greet them as if they are the original crew.

With Rose of Nevada, Mark Jenkin completes a trilogy that began with Bait (2019), followed by Enys Men (2022). Shot in 16mm, it is a mysterious tale travelling back to the nineties in a vibrant, prosperous fishing community, contrasting with the current era of financial difficulty.

The concept of home in Rose of Nevada is expressed through family relationships, memory, rooting, and longing for a place that no longer exists.

“Jenkin’s films are often centred around coastal towns or islands, and whilst they are experimental or even unsettling, there is always a big heart at the centre of the narrative. A heart that cares about family, tradition, culture, and the pull of ‘home’ ” – Paul F Cook, Joyzine
